About BookWyrm

BookWyrm is a federated, open-source social network for readers, built on ActivityPub. It lets users track their reading, write reviews, post quotes, and discover new books, while connecting with friends across different BookWyrm instances and other ActivityPub-compatible services like Mastodon and Pleroma. Unlike monolithic platforms such as GoodReads, BookWyrm embraces small, self-determining communities where each instance can choose its own federation partners, moderation policies, and focus — whether a book club, a genre community, or a group of friends. Federation also enables collaborative building of a decentralized book and author metadata database. BookWyrm is built with Django, PostgreSQL, Celery, and Redis on the backend, with Docker and Docker Compose for deployment. Users and administrators have full control over post visibility and federation settings, keeping privacy and community autonomy at the core of the platform.
