About D2

D2 is an open-source diagram scripting language created by Terrastruct for generating diagrams from plain text definitions. The project enables developers, architects, and technical teams to create infrastructure diagrams, flowcharts, sequence diagrams, software architecture maps, and system visualizations using a clean declarative syntax. D2 includes multiple layout engines such as Dagre, ELK, and TALA, supports SVG, PNG, and PDF exports, and provides live preview functionality through its CLI tooling. Built with extensibility in mind, D2 offers plugins, syntax highlighting, autoformatting, editor integrations, and language tooling for scalable diagram management. The ecosystem includes official integrations for VSCode, Vim, Obsidian, Slack, and Discord, alongside numerous community plugins and SDKs. D2 is designed for both local and server-side rendering, supports theming and custom fonts, and focuses on maintainable diagrams-as-code workflows for documentation, DevOps, cloud architecture, and software engineering projects.
