Private, local-first note-taking app that stores your whole life — notes, journal, tasks, and checklists — in plain .md files with no lock-in.
Files.md is a simple, local-first app for working with plain .md files, designed as a private and quiet space for thinking. It can hold notes, documents, journal entries, habits, checklists, and tasks, all stored as ordinary Markdown files that never leave your device. The app runs entirely in the browser as a portable PWA with no build systems, no Electron, and no installation required — you simply open the HTML entrypoint. It offers a chat-like flow for effortless thought capture, plus an optional Telegram chatbot for on-the-go access to your files. Synchronization is flexible: stay fully local-first with no data leaving the device, sync through an existing cloud folder like iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive, run a self-hosted sync server as a single Go binary, or use a hosted sync server for instant setup. The codebase emphasizes extremely low cognitive load, aiming to stay simple enough that one person or an LLM can hold the whole project in mind, and is intentionally kept easy for an LLM to extend. The project has been actively developed for five years and is free and open source.
