About Helix

Helix is a modal text editor that brings a Kakoune-inspired editing model, where selections come before actions, into a fast, terminal-based Rust application. Unlike many editors that rely on external plugins for core functionality, Helix integrates language server protocol (LSP) support, tree-sitter-based syntax highlighting, and incremental code parsing directly into the editor, offering auto-completion, diagnostics, and code navigation out of the box. Multiple selections are treated as a fundamental editing primitive rather than an afterthought, enabling concurrent edits across a file in a single motion. The project is available across major package managers and platforms via Repology, is community-funded through OpenCollective, and has an active Matrix Space for discussion and support. While primarily terminal-based, the maintainers have expressed interest in exploring a custom GPU-accelerated renderer using wgpu in the future. Helix has grown into one of the most popular modern text editors on GitHub, with a large and active contributor base.
