Lichess is a free and open-source online chess platform built around real-time gameplay, advanced analysis, and community-driven development. Powered by the Lila codebase written primarily in Scala 3, Lichess provides live chess games, tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, studies, puzzles, team competitions, forums, game search, and engine analysis using Stockfish. The platform supports millions of players worldwide and offers its interface in over 140 languages through community translations. Its architecture combines Scala, Play Framework, Akka Streams, Redis, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, TypeScript, Snabbdom, Sass, and dedicated WebSocket services to deliver highly scalable multiplayer gameplay.
