Back to HomeOpen-source, privacy-focused YouTube client. Watch without ads or a Google account, with subscriptions, playlists, and history stored on your device by default.
OpenTubeX is an open-source, privacy-focused YouTube client for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and experimental iOS/iPadOS, originally forked from FreeTube and now independently developed. It uses a built-in extractor or the Invidious API instead of YouTube's official API, and doesn't load YouTube's website or page JavaScript, reducing the standard browser tracking surface. Subscriptions, playlists, settings, and watch history stay local on your device by default; optional sync across devices is available, with an enhanced-privacy mode that encrypts data end-to-end before upload (legacy sync servers may receive data in plaintext, and the project documents this distinction clearly). It supports connecting to an external proxy such as Tor, and its privacy policy publishes a full threat model, including what each sync option shares and that IP addresses remain visible to YouTube or an Invidious operator unless a proxy is used. Features include ad-free playback, account-free subscriptions, SponsorBlock and DeArrow integration, customizable themes and layouts, a mini-player, multi-window support, export/import of subscriptions, and browser extensions that redirect YouTube links into the app. OpenTubeX discloses that it is developed with AI-assisted tools but that this does not involve sending user viewing data to any AI service. It is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPLv3) and is currently in beta.
