Open-source local and internet file sharing in the browser, inspired by AirDrop — with peer-to-peer transfers, device pairing, public rooms, and no installation required.
PairDrop is a free, open-source web-based file sharing app inspired by Apple's AirDrop, forked and significantly improved from Snapdrop. It enables peer-to-peer file and text transfers between devices on the same local network directly in the browser, with no installation or account required. For internet transfers, users can join temporary public rooms via a 5-letter code or QR code, or pair devices persistently via a 6-digit code or QR code so they always find each other regardless of network. PairDrop works across all platforms with a modern browser and supports sending directly from the OS share menu on iOS and Android, the context menu on Windows and Ubuntu, and via CLI. Multiple files are transferred simultaneously with a progress indicator and downloaded as a ZIP. Features include device display name customization, video and audio preview, sleep prevention during transfers, and self-hosting via Docker or Node.js with custom STUN/TURN server support. Built with WebRTC, WebSockets, Node.js, and PWA functionality.
