Open-source console file manager with VI key bindings and a minimalistic curses interface, built to browse and manage files entirely from the terminal.
Ranger is a console file manager with VI key bindings, providing a minimalistic curses interface with a directory-hierarchy view. It ships with rifle, a built-in file launcher that automatically determines which program should open a given file type, and supports a multi-column display along with a two-pane or multi-pane view mode for users coming from tools like Midnight Commander. Ranger provides live previews of the selected file or directory, common file operations such as create, chmod, copy, and delete, bulk renaming, and the ability to change your shell's working directory upon exit. It supports tabs, bookmarks, and mouse interaction, along with UTF-8 and right-to-left text handling. Enhanced file previews are enabled through its scope.sh script, which can integrate with a large range of optional external tools to preview images, videos, PDFs, ebooks, archives, HTML pages, 3D models, Jupyter notebooks, and more. Ranger is written in Python and requires the curses module along with a pager such as less. It's available via most operating system package managers or through PyPI (pip install ranger-fm), and is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.
