Scalable, distributed multi-model database built in Rust that unifies document, graph, relational, time-series, and geospatial data with a built-in API and permissions layer.
SurrealDB is a multi-model database built in Rust designed to unify multiple data models into a single engine, combining document, graph, relational, time-series, geospatial, and key-value data types with full-text, vector, and hybrid search alongside real-time, event-driven capabilities. Because it ships as a single Rust binary, SurrealDB can run embedded in an app, in the browser via WebAssembly, at the edge, as a self-hosted single node, or in a distributed cluster in the cloud. It functions as both a database and an API backend, supporting SurrealQL, GraphQL, REST, and JSON-RPC over WebSockets, with row-level permissions for granular access control. It also supports embedded JavaScript functions for custom server-side logic and an MCP server for LLM and AI-agent integration. SurrealDB removes the need for most custom backend and API code by letting developers define schema, access rules, and relationships directly in the database.
