Open-source personal memory search engine for Windows that records your screen locally, letting you rewind and search past activity via OCR text or image description.
Windrecorder is an open-source Windows alternative to Rewind AI and Microsoft's Windows Recall, continuously recording everything on-screen in small file sizes so users can rewind what they've seen, search through OCR-extracted text or image descriptions, and view activity statistics. All processing runs entirely locally with no internet connection or data upload required, keeping full ownership of recorded data. It supports recording multiple or single monitors, or just the active window, and only indexes changed scenes to keep the database efficient, with customizable skip conditions by window title, process name, included text, or screen idle time. A complete web UI lets users review footage and run OCR or image-semantic queries, alongside data summaries like activity statistics, word clouds, timelines, and scatter plots, with optional AI/LLM-based tag summarization. Two recording modes are available: automatic flexible screenshots (low resource use, screenshots every 3 seconds, converted to video every 15 minutes) or direct FFmpeg video recording (moderate resource use, smoother continuous capture). Beyond Windows' built-in OCR, Windrecorder supports third-party engines including RapidOCR, WeChat OCR, and Tesseract OCR for higher accuracy and broader language coverage. The project is available in Simplified Chinese, English, and Japanese, and is released under the GNU General Public License v2.0.
