About Zed

Zed is a high-performance, multiplayer code editor built by the creators of Atom and Tree-sitter, designed around the philosophy of 'code at the speed of thought.' It's written in Rust with a custom GPU-accelerated UI framework (GPUI) for exceptional responsiveness, and supports real-time multiplayer collaboration, letting multiple developers edit and navigate the same codebase together live. Zed includes built-in AI-assisted coding features, an integrated terminal, extensive language support via Tree-sitter and language servers, and an extensible architecture supporting community-built extensions. It's available as a direct download or through native package managers on macOS, Linux, and Windows, with a web version still in development. Zed is developed by Zed Industries, Inc., a for-profit company that also offers paid hosted features, while the core editor source code remains open. It's released under GPL-3.0-or-later, with select components under Apache-2.0 where marked, and uses cargo-about to track and verify third-party dependency licensing in CI.
